1.  Be cautious!  Even though your pet would never bite you under normal circumstances, they may be in shock and not recognize you.
2.  If animal is apprehensive, injured or trying to bite, muzzle before handling.
3.  Use gauze and hold firm, but gentle, pressure on wound to control the bleeding.  If wound is very large, you may need to use a towel.
4.  Do not remove any foreign objects penetrating the body.  Wrap around object.
5.  Do not remove gauze, you will remove the clot.  Use vet wrap or tape to firmly but not tightly secure gauze into place.
6.  Elevate affected area if possible.
7.  Do not assume that because bleeding has stopped, that the animal is fine.  Internal damage, infection and other conditions may not be apparent.  Infections occur often if not medicated. Seek medical attention immediately.
8.  Call veterinarian right away.  Tell them what happened and when.  Tell them how long it will take you to get there. Transport animal to veterinarian immediately.
